What is BioThane® Made From?

What is BioThane® Made From?

BioThane® is made from a polyester webbing core coated with PVC (polyvinyl chloride). The polyester base provides tensile strength and structure, while the PVC coating makes the material waterproof, flexible, easy to clean, and highly resistant to abrasion. The result is a strap material that looks and feels similar to leather, but outperforms it in nearly every outdoor condition.

What Exactly is BioThane®?

BioThane® is a coated webbing material manufactured by BioThane Coated Webbing Corp. It comes in strap form and is used to make dog leashes, dog collars, horse tack, and other gear that needs to hold up in demanding conditions.

The material is available in different widths, thicknesses, and weights, allowing you to match the right grade to your dog's size and activity level. It also comes in a wide range of colors, so you can find one that fits your style.

BioThane® Beta: The Most Common Grade

The grade most commonly used in dog collars and leashes is BioThane® Beta, a polyester webbing base with a PVC coating. It's the go-to choice for pet gear because it's waterproof, odorless, and exceptionally durable. At Vivid Canine, all of our BioThane® collars and leashes are made from Beta-grade material, handcrafted in the USA.

BioThane® Uses

BioThane® is ideal for dog gear because it holds up where other materials fall short. It's resistant to mold, mildew, rot, and moisture, making it a natural fit for dogs that swim, hike, or just spend a lot of time outside.

Because BioThane® is so durable and abrasion-resistant, it can replace leather on almost any piece of dog gear. It won't wear out as quickly as leather under normal use, which means fewer replacements over time.

One important note: While BioThane® is extremely strong, it is not chew-proof. Sharp objects, including teeth, can damage the material if allowed direct contact. We always recommend inspecting your dog's gear regularly for signs of wear.

The Difference Between BioThane® and Leather

BioThane® and leather may look similar, but they perform very differently. Here's how they compare:

Waterproof: BioThane® does not absorb moisture. Leather does, and repeated wetting and drying causes it to crack and degrade over time.

Stretch: BioThane® does not stretch when wet or dry. Leather can stretch and lose its shape, especially under load.

Maintenance: BioThane® requires no conditioning, oiling, or special care. Leather needs regular treatment to stay supple and prevent cracking.

Cost: BioThane® is generally more affordable than leather and lasts longer in outdoor conditions, making it a better long-term value for active dogs.

UV resistance: Extended sun exposure can degrade leather. BioThane® holds up better, though we still recommend avoiding prolonged direct sunlight when storing your gear.

BioThane® Care Tips

One of BioThane®'s biggest advantages is how easy it is to maintain. Here's what you need to know:

- Cleaning: Handwash with mild soap and warm water. Use a soft-bristle brush (like a toothbrush) to remove dirt from textured surfaces. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth.

- DEET warning: Do not allow DEET-based insect repellents to contact BioThane®. DEET can cause staining, tackiness, or pitting of the PVC coating.

- Sun storage: Avoid leaving BioThane® gear in direct sunlight for extended periods when not in use.

- Inspection: Periodically check your gear for cracks, tears, or signs of wear — especially at hardware attachment points.
