How to Spot a Genuine BioThane® Dog Product

How to Spot a Genuine BioThane® Dog Product

The clear choice for dog gear — if you know what to look for.

With BioThane® growing in popularity, imitation materials are flooding the market. Here's how to tell the real thing from a knockoff before you buy.

What Is Genuine BioThane®?

BioThane® is a trademarked coated webbing material manufactured by BioThane Coated Webbing Corp. It's made from a polyester base coated with TPU or PVC — giving it its signature waterproof, flexible, and odor-resistant properties. If a product doesn't use material sourced from the actual manufacturer, it's not genuine BioThane®.

1. Check for the BioThane® name — spelled correctly

Genuine products will reference BioThane® with the registered trademark symbol. Watch for misspellings like "Bio-Thane," "Biothane" (no cap), or vague terms like "BioThane-style," "BioThane-like," "TPU webbing," "PVC waterproof collar," "coated webbing collar," or "vegan leather waterproof collar."

2. Feel the flexibility

Real BioThane® is supple and flexible even in cold temperatures — never sticky or rubbery, with a soft, smooth, leather-like feel. Imitation materials often feel stiff, plasticky, rubber-like, or tacky.

3. Look at the edges

Genuine BioThane® has clean, smooth edges when cut, with a finely woven, high-strength inner webbing. "Waterproof webbing" imitations are often made with lower-quality coatings or weaker cores that crack, stiffen in the cold, or peel over time — low-quality fibers and a weak structure are why imitation collars can stretch, warp, or even snap under tension, a safety risk that isn't always visible until it's too late.

4. Look for consistent color and quality

Genuine BioThane® is held to strict manufacturing standards — consistent texture, reliable strength, and long-lasting color. It comes in a wide range of vibrant colors and sizes, which is why every Vivid Canine collar and leash starts here. Great gear should look as good as it performs.

5. Test the waterproofing

Run water over it — genuine BioThane® beads and wipes completely dry. Imitation materials may absorb moisture over time or feel damp after extended exposure.

6. Ask the brand directly

Reputable brands that use genuine BioThane® will clearly state this in their product descriptions and are transparent about the material they use.

7. Think long-term

The real difference between genuine BioThane® and imitation materials shows up over time. Real BioThane® stays flexible, retains its color, resists cracking and peeling, sheds odors, and withstands saltwater, mud, and UV without breaking down. Imitations tell a different story — they crack, peel, stiffen in the cold, fade, absorb odors, and can stretch or fail under tension. Behind every collar and leash that lasts is a material that was chosen, not compromised.

Why It Matters for Your Dog

Imitation materials may look similar out of the box but break down faster, harbor bacteria and odors, and can lose structural integrity — especially in wet or outdoor conditions. For a working collar or leash that your dog wears every day, material quality isn't a detail; it's the decision that drives everything else.
