What is PVD Black?
What is PVD Black?
PVD stands for Physical Vapor Deposition, a finishing process that bonds an ultra-thin layer of material directly to the surface of metal hardware at the molecular level. The result is a finish that is significantly harder, more scratch-resistant, and more durable than standard paint, powder coat, or plating.
Why it matters for dog gear
Standard matte black hardware is typically achieved through electroplating or paint, finishes that can chip, scratch, and wear through with regular use. PVD Black is different. The coating is bonded at the molecular level, making it extremely resistant to:
- Scratching and abrasion
- Corrosion and moisture
- Fading and wear over time
What does it look like?
PVD Black has a rich, consistent matte black appearance that holds up over time. Unlike plated finishes that can show wear at contact points, PVD maintains its look even with heavy daily use.

Why PVD Black?
When you select black hardware, your D-Ring is automatically PVD Black. We don't cut corners with painted or plated finishes that chip and wear through. PVD is simply the right way to do black hardware, so it's the only way we do it.
